The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has intensified its enforcement campaign against tax evasion, taking strict action against businesses found manipulating sales records and violating provincial sales tax laws in Lahore and Rawalpindi.

Irregularities Uncovered in Lahore

In Lahore, PRA inspection teams conducted surprise audits of five prominent coffee outlets located in upscale areas of the city. During a detailed review of their Point of Sale (POS) systems, officials uncovered serious discrepancies and deliberate tampering with electronic sales data.

According to the authority, these violations were not minor errors but intentional attempts to underreport sales. As a result, the PRA imposed cumulative penalties amounting to Rs. 7 million on the offending businesses. Officials noted that action was taken only after repeated warnings and prior directives were ignored.

Builders’ Offices Sealed in Rawalpindi

Meanwhile, in Rawalpindi, enforcement teams sealed the offices of several construction companies for failing to pay sales tax on services. In addition, 25 business outlets were served notices for collecting sales tax from customers but not depositing the amount into the government treasury.

The PRA stressed that withholding collected sales tax is a serious offence under the law and can lead to severe penalties, including sealing of premises and legal proceedings.

PRA Issues Warning to Businesses

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance, the Punjab Revenue Authority warned businesses across the province to ensure full compliance with sales tax regulations. Authorities made it clear that manipulation of electronic sales records and tax evasion will not be tolerated, and enforcement operations will continue without discrimination.

Advice for Consumers

The PRA also urged consumers to play their part in curbing tax evasion by always asking for computerized receipts or e-bills after making purchases. These receipts help ensure transparency and support the documentation of the economy.

Strengthening Tax Compliance

This enforcement drive is part of the PRA’s broader strategy to improve tax compliance, enhance economic documentation, and safeguard public revenue. By taking firm action against violators, the authority aims to promote a fair business environment where compliant taxpayers are not disadvantaged.
