The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has introduced new procedures for faceless income tax assessments in Pakistan, allowing tax cases to be processed through automated case allocation, online hearings and electronic document submissions. The move comes ahead of the October 31, 2026, income tax return filing deadline.

Under the new rules, the Faceless Assessment Unit will handle different assessment proceedings, including amendments to tax assessments, provisional assessments and the implementation of appellate decisions. Officers can also issue notices, request supporting evidence and impose applicable penalties under the law.

Taxpayers will be able to submit responses and relevant documents through the FBR’s IRIS portal. The procedures also allow online hearings, technical assistance and physical verification where necessary.

In a separate notification, the FBR introduced Rule 33U through SRO 1904(I)/2026, specifying eligibility conditions and documentation requirements for tax credits under Section 64D of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

With the October 31 deadline approaching and no further extension confirmed in the information provided, taxpayers should ensure timely return submission, maintain accurate records and respond promptly to any official notices.

The new framework represents another step towards digital tax administration in Pakistan, although its effectiveness will depend on implementation and compliance by both taxpayers and tax authorities.
