The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has announced an extension in the deadline for taxpayers to file their sales tax and federal excise returns for the tax period of August 2026.
Under the latest directive issued on September 18, taxpayers will now have until September 30, 2026, to submit their August returns. The relief has been extended to taxpayers across the board, subject to a key condition regarding payment of the applicable sales tax liability.
Payment Must Have Been Made on Time
The extension provides additional time for filing the relevant returns; however, it does not change the original deadline for depositing the due sales tax liability.
Taxpayers seeking to benefit from the extended filing period must have paid their sales tax liability within the originally prescribed due date. Therefore, businesses that have fulfilled their payment obligation on time can use the additional period to complete and submit their returns.
FBR Issues Formal Directive
The FBR issued the extension under the legal authority granted by Section 74 of the Sales Tax Act, 1990, and Section 43 of the Federal Excise Act, 2005.
The directive was circulated to Chief Commissioners Inland Revenue serving at Large Taxpayers Offices (LTOs), Corporate Tax Offices (CTOs), and Regional Tax Offices (RTOs).
What the Extension Means for Taxpayers
The decision gives eligible taxpayers additional time to finalize their August 2026 sales tax and federal excise filings. The revised deadline of September 30 is particularly relevant for businesses that have already deposited their required sales tax but still need additional time to complete the return filing process.
It is important for taxpayers to understand that the extension applies to return submission, while the requirement to deposit the due sales tax within the original deadline remains unchanged.
Final Deadline: September 30
With the latest FBR directive, eligible taxpayers should ensure that their August 2026 sales tax and federal excise returns are submitted no later than September 30, 2026.
Businesses should also maintain records confirming that their applicable sales tax liability was deposited within the original prescribed timeframe, as this is the condition attached to the filing extension.
The FBR’s move provides additional filing time while keeping the existing payment requirement intact, allowing compliant taxpayers to complete their August tax returns within the revised deadline.
