The Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) is preparing to introduce a province-wide awareness campaign aimed at reducing tax evasion and encouraging citizens to play a more active role in ensuring tax compliance across Punjab. The initiative reflects the government’s growing focus on improving transparency and strengthening the province’s revenue system.
The campaign is expected to begin in April and will initially focus on educational institutions. During a meeting chaired by PRA Chairman Moazzam Iqbal Sipra, officials agreed that schools could serve as an effective platform for spreading awareness about civic responsibility. Under the plan, students will be encouraged to act as ambassadors who can help educate their communities about the importance of paying taxes and supporting public development.
A key part of the campaign is public engagement through digital tools. Citizens will be able to verify receipts issued by businesses such as hotels, restaurants, gyms, and aesthetic clinics using the PRA mobile application or a dedicated WhatsApp number. This step is intended to help detect fake receipts that some businesses use to hide their actual transactions and avoid paying the correct amount of tax.
The initiative also introduces incentives for individuals who report tax violations. Authorities have announced that people who provide credible information about tax fraud may receive up to 20 percent of the recovered tax amount as a reward. This measure will operate under the proposed Whistleblower Act (Punjab tax enforcement), which is expected to come into effect once it receives formal government approval.
Officials believe that involving the public, especially young students, can help build long-term awareness about taxation and civic duty. By combining education, technology, and financial incentives, the campaign aims to create a stronger culture of accountability and transparency in the province.
Ultimately, the initiative represents an effort to shift public attitudes toward taxation. By encouraging citizens to verify receipts, report irregularities, and understand the role of taxes in funding public services, authorities hope to foster greater trust and participation in the tax system throughout Punjab.
